Doreen Virtue
Do we love her or hate her?
I personally like her decks even though as was pointed out to me before, she does not actually draw them herself. Some people find that to be totally outrageous and unacceptable and refuse to go anywhere near her work.
But saying that most Tarot decks are not illustrated by the person who's name they have on the box. Sometimes both the person who came up with the idea of the deck and the person who illustrated it, combine their name to make the title of the deck. With that though the person who's idea it was works with the illustrators and they come up with drafts of the cards and then they pick which ones work best etc etc.
Take the Rider Waite deck for instance which is also known as: The Rider deck, Or The Original Rider Waite deck, or The Rider-Waite-Smith deck, Waite Smith deck, Waite-Colman-Smith deck.
These cards were illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith under the direction of A.E Waite and was published by the Rider Company. So you can see how they came up with the names for the deck.
Back to Doreen Virtue
It would seem that every picture used on one of her cards has been painted by a different artist. I am unsure whether they have been made specifically for Doreen Virtue, or if she liked them and wanted to include them in her decks. According to the guide book which comes with the deck "Archangel Oracle Cards" you cannot buy the prints of the images from Doreen herself. They give you contact details for the artists and tells you a little bio about them. Due to the fact that you cannot buy the prints from Doreen and that you have to go directly to the artist makes me think that she liked the images and paid to use them. If they were made for her then surely copyright would have been signed over to her when she paid these artists for their assistance. Also I would think that they would not be able to be selling the prints on their websites as they would no longer own the copyright to do so.
Any thoughts?
