Dragon's Blood is most often commercially derived from one of two plant sources: Dracaena (true dragon's blood) and Daemonorops. Don't worry. For most uses, it makes little or no difference (Just one and I'll mention it later). Dragon's Blood is considered traditionally, by most practitioners, to be a very Mars oriented ingredient and I concur. It has enjoyed use medicinally, as incense, in powders and inks for all sorts of magickal uses.
Medicinally, it is usually used to stop bleeding. Most often in conjunction with other herbs such as Tien Chi (Radix Psuedo-Ginseng), powdered angelica, Frankincense and Myrrh. Since the resin derived from the Daemonorops actually has anticoagulant properties, I'd be especially careful doing this. It's best to know what you actually have, eh?
In incense and powders. it is primarily used to give a little extra oomph to the whole. It's martian orientation seems to add urgency to any mix and results in a sort of instant manifestation of need. It's main uses for these things are Purification, Banishing, Sexual Desire and Protection. Besides, it smells lovely.
Below, I have given a small list of traditional inks, so that you can make your own and thereby save some cash. It's far better to make your own than pay someone at the local Botanica or New Age shop, right? Well, enjoy!
Dragon's Blood Ink
1 part Dragon's Blood
1part Gum arabic
15 parts alcohol
(You may choose to add soot by pinchfuls, to any of these recipes. Totally up to you)
same recipe could be: 1 pint alcohol and 1 ounce per dried ingredient. That should provide a guideline.
A simple ink that allows one to store energy within the written Word...
Bat's Blood Oil
1.5 cups alcohol
2/3 cup Dragon's Blood
1/3 cup myrrh
2 tablespoons gum arabic
1 drop cinnamon oil
2 drops indigo color (Beet juice works too)
Protection, offensive spellwork and anything ooky in cemeteries!
Dove's Blood Ink
1.5 cups alcohol
1/3 cup Dragon's Blood
1/3 cup gum arabic
2 drops cinnamon oil
2 drops bay oil
2 drops rose oil
For "loving" energies, peaceful things and Sacred Bonds..
As for the alcohol in these recipes, I'd suggest 151 Rum or 190 proof Everclear, if you can get it. Me... I'm more likely to drink it...
