Just wanted to wish you all a happy valentines day!
Here is a little info on where the tradition of sending valentines comes from. For us single folk valentines can be a bit of a sad holiday(if you can call it that) so instead of thinking "oh please" or panicing about what you are going to tell people that you are doing on this night, the night of which society seems to make you feel bad on for not being attached or having a hot date.
Legend tells of a Christian priest in third-century Rome. St Valentine, as he has come to be called, was a "champion of lovers". Claudius II, who was emperor at the time, had banned marriage in hopes that less people would have reasons to not join his army. Married men prefered to stay at home with their childen and wives so Claudius decided to take those reasons for not becoming soliders away.
Valentine who had become a sort of patron to lovers, went against Claudius and began conducting secret marriage ceremonies in candlelit caverns.
That was until he was caught and sentenced to death!
Whilst awaiting his execution, one legend tells of a story in which he fell in love with the jailers daughter. On the day he was to be put to death, which was Febuary 14, he had sent his love a letter. It was signed: "From your Valentine."
Another legend tells of young couples throwing gifts of flowers into his cell in thanks for his dedication to love, and to keep his hopes up. This is where the tradition of giving cards and flowers as symbols of your love on valentines day comes from.
As you can see this day is much more than just "that silly time of year when people waste money on over priced roses and cards".
It is a day where we should put aside time to tell those we love how we feel. To remember lost loves and to be thankful for the people in our lives now. And above all.....it is a time to tell yourself how much you, love you.
If you have no plans then make plans, with yourself. Make yourself a nice meal, watch a movie that makes you smile. Have a hot bath and who says we can only have chocolates if someone bought them for us? Heck crack open a bottle of bubbly and have yourself some chocolate covered strawberries. You deserve the treat!
