If you own a set, what is it made from? Is it wood? Is it crystal? I have a clay set which I cannot stand as the feel of them makes me feel like someone is scratching a chalkboard.......oh how I hate chalk and chalkboards lol. I also have another set that feels nicer but not sure what they are made from, some type of stone or clay I think. I am thinking about getting me an onyx set in the near future

I made my own runes out of wood. Unfortunately, it was like craft wood so it is probably pine or something. I used a wood-burning tool to burn the runic symbols on them, and then I took ocher and linseed oil to stain them. All of them are equally-weighted and are great for runecasting.
I want to buy a gemstone set, but that would mainly be for looks or "tarot style" rune drawing.

At one point I was going to make my own set out of willow but ultimately I decided against it. I felt it was inappropriate for me to use the runes when I don't work with the Norse gods, nor do I know much of their history, I also didn't feel like pricking myself a few dozen times to stain the backs.

I remember your runes spyke, they were lovely. I was thinking about making some ages ago if you remember but I came up with the fact that if I have trouble with stick-men then I don't think making runes would be wise lol.
Daniel- why would you need to prick yourself to stain the backs? Want to put your blood in them? Also I don't think it really matters if you know much about the Norse gods or the history. I mean nobody knows for sure the history of the tarot but they have some rough theories and you are fine with them....

Oh wow! I had totally forgot that I showed them off in Pagan Planet! Yeah, I need to make new ones out of oak, ash, or birch.

Rob, I personally wouldn't use them since they are so ingrained in the Norse mythology. I believe the blood is tradition, it's been a while since I've done research on it so don't quote me unless I'm right.
I get what your saying about the histories but, I dunno, maybe it's the Norse aspect of things I don't like; and I get what you mean with the tarot, I mean after all I am great with them. I am starting to get interested in the mythology, maybe not enough to actually invoke one of the Norse gods into my body but interested enough to learn.

If you are looking for a good book on runes as a divination tool, I suggest Edred Thorsson's Runecaster's Handbook or Diana Paxson's Taking up the Runes

The tarot has alot of christian stuff in it which I pretend isn't really there haha. Well christian.....jewish.....it is old testimant bible so Although I have the robin wood deck which is wiccan. Speaking of that I am going to go get that deck out after dinner and have a look see although I'm working with the universal waite that the moment. I get that this isn't a tarot thread but this is where the conversation has taken me lol. The rune book I have and use is the book of runes that comes with the set. I really need to get another one though

The Book of Runes by Ralph Blum is very interesting, and is great for beginning to learn runes as a divination system. But I would like to point out, there is an overwhelming amount of evidence that speaks to the runes as a Geomantic divination device and not simply a "Norse Tarot" which is why I suggest Thorsson's book

Who said that they were a "norse tarot"? me? sorry didn't mean to suggest that they are simply just another form of divination. They are alot deeper than just that which is why I havnt studied them much as it is a whole other subject and havn't gotten around it it yet.

XD I didn't mean to imply you did, I was saying Ralph Blum (the author of the book of runes you have) treats them in a very tarotlicious way lol I wanted to point that out to some of the people who might not have any dealings with runes at all lol
